Digging Up A Few Books At Halloween!
The Fraterfest Read-A-Thon is kicking off tomorrow, October 15th. If you haven’t sign up to join us for this fun Halloween event, you can sign up at https://caffeinatedbookreviewer.com/2020/09/fraterfest-readathon-sign-up-2.html. This will be my first year to join this event and I’m so excited! (Spoken as a true introvert of course.)
Reading something seasonal is my favorite way to get into the Fall and Halloween spirit but this Read-A-Thon is a great motivator. I will admit that even though I love to watch creepy stuff on TV (ie. The Walking Dead and The Boyz), I tend to stick with cozy mysteries in my reading. Nothing too gory or scary — I do like to sleep at night. But this time I am going to step out of my comfort zone and try something different. I have chosen one audio book and one hardback book. Both books had really good reviews on Amazon. Here are my choices
Steel Magnolias meets Dracula in this ’90s-set horror novel about a women’s book club that must do battle with a mysterious newcomer to their small Southern town, perfect for murderinos and fans of Stephen King.
Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her husband is a workaholic, her teenage kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on her endless to-do list. The only thing keeping her sane is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are about their own families.
One evening after book club, Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor’s handsome nephew, James Harris, into her life. James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in years. But when children on the other side of town go missing, their deaths written off by local police, Patricia has reason to believe James Harris is more of a Bundy than a Brad Pitt. The real problem? James is a monster of a different kind—and Patricia has already invited him in.
Little by little, James will insinuate himself into Patricia’s life and try to take everything she took for granted—including the book club—but she won’t surrender without a fight in this blood-soaked tale of neighborly kindness gone wrong.
And
My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I’m a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I’m the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I’m the only one there.
With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.
I hope that you join me and many others for the Caffeinated Reviewer’s Fraterfest Read-A-Thon. There will be prizes and chances to see what others are reading all helping us get into the spooky holiday spirit! Let me know in the comments below what you are reading. I’d love to see what everyone has chosen.
