A Review – The Adventures of Spike The Wonder Dog
Spike the Wonder Dog is a very funny English Bull Terrier with a keen comedic eye for human foibles and a politically incorrect sense of humor. He rockets to TV and internet fame along with his master Bud, who hosts a local morning show in High Point, North Carolina. Spike and Bud soon hit the fast track to bigger stardom when Bud signs on for a talk show in New York City. Spike tells the story of his rise to fame and the price he and Bud pay for that fame.
Oh wow! What can I say about this book?! First off, I received a free copy of The Adventures of Spike The Wonder Dog but that in no way influences my review. Second, I was excited to read this story about Spike because he is an English Bull Terrier and I have had granddogs that are this crazy breed. (And yes, I know from first hand experience they are definitely on the lunatic fringe!)
I love the fact that this story is told in first person. Spike tells the tails of his adventures to Bill Boggs, the author of the book. This gives the reader Spike’s canine perspective on the antics in his life. Beginning with Spike and his owner Bud living and working in North Carolina, he dives in head first on a raucous romp through the local airwaves. Bud is a television host and incorporates Spike into his T.V. show with great success. Crazy stunts and experiences for the duo on and off of the screen lead to page turning fun. Soon Spike finds himself and Bud living in New York city as Bud begins building a new show in the Big Apple. Once again many crazy stunts and experiences beset the two friends with comical results.
This book is a series of small stories capturing the many different events that happen to Spike and Bud on their journey to stardom. They remind me of television comedy sitcoms and how each week there is a different storyline. The main characters, Bud and Spike, stay the same but new and interesting supporting characters are introduced each week or in this case with each new story.
I had a love/hate relationship with this book. Sometimes the stories were loaded with juvenile humor. Other times, the stories romped with really funny antics that had me laughing out loud. Towards the end is when my heart was fully engaged, there was one story that I couldn’t put the book down until I knew how it would end. I finished the book with a little chuckle and a lighter heart.
Overall Spike the Wonder Dog was an enjoyable read. What I loved best was the relationship between Spike and Bud that was woven throughout the story. The connection showed how our pets can be our best friends and truly a part of the family.
