One Good Thing ∼ Comics!
A few weeks ago the local Sunday newspaper showed up on our driveway. We haven’t subscribed to the paper in years so this was a nice surprise. I love the newspaper! Since I was a kid my favorite thing was to sit down with my breakfast and read the news paper every morning. The best day of the week was Sunday! I love all the different sections that come with the Sunday edition – sports, real estate, business, lifestyle, advertisements, travel, etc. But best of all – the comics!!
My “One Good Thing” this time around is the comic section of newspapers. When the newspaper showed up unexpectedly it reminded me how much enjoyment I receive from reading it. Now, it’s not the actual news that I enjoy. That is just as frustrating and depressing in print as it is on TV or the internet. No, I receive immense joy from reading the comics. When we regularly subscribed to the newspaper the first thing I would do in the morning was flip to the back of the paper and pour over the comic section. I read all of them. It didn’t matter if it was Marmaduke, Non Sequitur or Baby Blues.
Each comic brings its own form of humor to the page. Some have been around longer then I have been alive. Beetle Bailey began in 1950. Dennis the Menace started in 1951. Alley Oop came to life in 1932!! Baby Blues launched in 1990 and quickly became one of my favorites. It features the MacPherson family with mom, Wanda and a dad, Darryl along with a little girl named Zoe. This mimicked my family at the time, so I totally related to many of the experiences and jokes. In 1995 the MacPherson family added a son by the name of Hamish. The funny thing was we added a son the same year! His name is Harrison.
I have always felt that reading the comics first thing in morning was a fabulous way to start any day. Monday thru Saturday the comics give you a quick laugh before heading out into the world. On Sundays the larger, colored comic section gives you time to relax and slow down as well as have a giggle or two. What are your favorite comics? What have they brought to your life? What is your “One Good Thing”?
