Wahoo!! June is National Audiobook Month!!
I am an avid reader. Unfortunately free time to sit down and read a book is at a premium. That is why I LOVE audiobooks!! Wow that sounds like one of those “As seen on TV” commercials. Regardless of the cheese, I do love audiobooks. 🙂
Audiobooks allow me to feed my reading appetite daily but still be able to accomplish other things. You will find me listening to an audiobook every morning while I am getting ready for the day. If I get really into the book I will listen to it in my car as I am running errands. My husband loves to listen to audiobooks when he is out for a long run. These kinds of activities allow me (and my hubby) to read three to four books a month depending on the length. Hubby listened to Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and it was around 55 hours long, soooo that took a while to get through (and about 330 miles of running!) Most of the books I listen to are between 8 and 11 hours in length.
Where do I get the books to feed my addiction? I have a membership on Audible.com that I purchase a credit from once a month. This monthly membership costs $14.95. This is a really good deal if you use your credits to purchase audiobooks that would normally cost you around $20.00. If you are new to Audible.com you can sign up for a 30 day free trial that scores you two free books. I also use an app called Hoopla that I can use to borrow books from my local library. I like Audible.com when I want new releases but Hoopla is great for slightly older books. You can also purchase audiobooks from iTunes but I have read articles that iTunes might be going away, so buy with caution.
All of the books I acquire are downloaded to my cellphone when I am ready to listen to them. My husband uses his iPod. You can also listen on your computer or tablet. I have even started to see commercials where your audiobook plays through Alexa. I don’t recommend that but I will save that rant for another post. 🙂 When I listen to my books in the mornings I use a little Bluetooth speaker with my phone. When I am in my car I am able to connect to the car’s Bluetooth and listen through the radio. In my older Suburban I just used the little speaker since it didn’t have Bluetooth capabilities. So much technology!
Summer vacation is a great time to give audiobooks a try. As anyone knows an engaging book can make an airplane ride more enjoyable. A cross country car trip to see Grandma can be less stress with a fun story. The world can come to life as you listen to a grand adventure on a train. So add a couple of audiobooks to your summer reading list and see where they can take you.
I have included a starting list of my summer reads. What books will be in your beach bag this year? I would love to hear what you would recommend. Let me know in the comments below.
