Halo Looks Good On All My Furry Angels!
** I received free product for this review. All opinions are my own **
OK, so any company that has a tagline of “The proof is in the poop” and is willing to hand out cookies with an adorable poop character made out of frosting on them deserves my attention 🙂 . Back in April at the BlogPaws conference, I had the chance to meet the representatives for Halo pet foods. They were lovely people and yes they handed out those cookies, but they also convinced me to have our furry tribe try out the Halo line of food and other products. I am so glad that they did!
Our Chihuahuas Percy, Oliver and Iggy, along with our cats Stanley and Sophie have all been eating Halo’s hard kibble for about three months now. We have also given all of them the Halo soft food randomly for the same amount of time. Amazingly, all five of them love the Halo products! I don’t say that out of hand. Those of you that regularly read this blog have heard me say how picky Percy and the two cats are. They remind me of the old Life cereal commercial with the kid Mikey. The memorable line in the ad was something like “Give the cereal to Mikey. He won’t eat it. He hates everything.” That is Percy, Stanley and Sophie. We have the opportunity to try a lot of different products and these three amigos have liked very little. The cats are so picky that I actually tried to talk the Halo rep out of sending me any cat food. The rep assured me that my cats would indeed like their products. “Hmm … we’ll see”, was my thought at the time. I can honestly say that I am so glad that he convinced me to try both the dog and cat food.
So you might be asking yourself what is so great about Halo? To start, all of their foods are made with Whole Meat! There is no “meat meal” in Halo food. If you were like me, you might wonder what is “meat meal”? Glad you asked. It is the remnants from slaughterhouses and fish processing plants that are not suitable for human consumption. Companies take these cast offs and cook them using high heat, dehydrate them and turn them into a powdery substance that is used as a prime ingredient in most dog and cat foods on the market. Yum! Sounds tasty doesn’t it? The protein in “meat meal” is only about 61% digestible. How in the world is that giving your pet the nutrition that they need to stay healthy and active? Whole meat is exactly what it sounds like. It is real whole meat, poultry and fish that is sourced for human food. This whole meat has a digestibility rate of approximately 95%. Meaning that your dog or cat can use more of the nutrients in their food. Big difference! That is also where the tagline of “The proof is in the poop” comes from. When your pet is taking in and using more of the food that they are eating, less is coming out the other end – if you know what I mean. 🙂
Halo is also committed to something they call “OrigiNative” sourcing. Their goal is to use only whole meats in their foods but to also ethically source those meats. They source cage free poultry, pasture raised beef and wild caught fish from certified sustainable fisheries. Halo will not use meat that has been factory farmed in close confinement, or raised on antibiotics or genetically modified feeds. Instead, they foster naturally raised animals, regenerative soils, and environmental balance. Wow! Can your pet food compete with that? I know that sounds great and all, but how do we know if that is true? Well Halo has met the standards and earned certifications of two independent organizations that evaluate companies for sustainable and responsible sourcing practices. Those organizations are the Global Animal Partnership certification and the Marine Stewardship Council certification. The goodness doesn’t stop with the meat either. Halo uses only Non-GMO fruits and vegetables in their foods. This is an added bonus for the meat recipe foods but essential for Halo’s vegan recipe food.
Now I know that may sound a bit fluffy to some of you, but for those of you that are like me, I want to give my pets the pet that I can. A premium food like Halo that is loaded with natural ingredients that you can pronounce is worth its weight in gold. Just like people, the better fuel (food) that we give out bodies, the better our body will perform. Good nutrition allows us to be more active, stay healthy during flu season, and live a longer more full life. The same is true with our four legged friends. The thing is they can’t go buy the food themselves. It is up to us as pet parents to supply our furry best friends with the best food to keep them at their best. What you spend on a good premium food can be saved in veterinarian bills when your pet is in need. Its simple math my friends. 🙂
So to wrap up this review, I am now a big fan of Halo brand pet foods. So far we have had great success with the kibble and the soft food for both our dogs and our cats. We have tested three flavors of the dog food. My tribe liked the small breed Holistic Chicken & Chicken Liver flavor as well as the Holistic Game Bird Medley flavor the best. If you are interested in a vegan diet for your pet we also tried out the Holistic Garden of Vegan recipe. My three Chihuahuas liked the vegan recipe and ate a whole bag of it without issue but they LOVED the meat recipes. Stanley and Sophie have enjoyed the Holistic Game Bird Medley and the Chicken & Chicken Liver recipe for indoor cats. Both of these flavors were met with great approval from both of our cats. As I mentioned before our cats are incredibly picky, so to have both of them really like the same food yet alone the two different flavors of a food is amazing!
The soft food was a big hit with our pups. They had the chance to try out several cans of the Chicken recipe for adult dogs. Percy, who is always finicky when it comes to soft food, ate it up and literally begged for more. This made me very happy as he is our littlest at only 6.5 lbs. Both cats have had a variety of the adult cat soft food. Their favorite is, of course, the grain free Salmon recipe. I give them each a spoonful of soft food every day plus their kibble. Halo reports on their web site that by adding a touch of soft food to your pets diet each day you can help them to stay better hydrated.
We are currently trying out some of the supplement products that Halo has to offer, so I will write again once we have given them a through test. So for now, I will leave you with my strong recommendation of the Halo pet food products. Remember our tribe of fur-balls is also our family. Doesn’t your family deserve great quality food?
As always I would love to hear from you. If you are already a Halo fan or are new to the product please let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
